An Evaluation of Adaptive Decentralised Nature Inspired Traffic Light Control

چکیده
Road traffic is an increasingly large problem which often blights urban areas. Continually building additional infrastructure is not only costly but also often unwelcome if not impossible. The cause of traffic jams however are not always, for example, a direct result of accidents or insufficient road capacity. Traffic jams can often be attributed to the interactions of individual drivers and are therefore an emergent phenomena. Controlling traffic intelligently is therefore a difficult problem but an essential part of using existing infrastructure effectively. Many species of social insects, such as termites and honeybees, exhibit self-organisation. Colonies of such social insects are decentralised systems that are capable of demonstrating efficiency, robustness and flexibility. The response threshold algorithm is capable of explaining how, without centralised control, individual social insects can specialise upon specific tasks whilst as a whole producing coordinated behaviour to meet the needs of the colony. Furthermore, this algorithm has been applied to resource allocation problems within multi-agent systems. Results from these studies show that the algorithm causes agents to specialise effectively within both static and dynamic environments. The application of the response threshold algorithm upon a traffic light control problem contrasts with the more traditional centralised approaches but has several potential benefits. The implementation of traffic control systems based upon the response threshold is discussed. In addition, significant performance testing is included along with detailed potential future work and conclusions.

These networks have been created to communicate between vehicles and traffic control on the roads. have similar features to MANETs and their main special property is the high-speed node mobility which makes a quick change of the network. The rapid change of network topology is a major challenge in routing. One of the we...
متن کاملMoving Nature-Inspired Algorithms to Parallel, Asynchronous and Decentralised Environments
This paper motivates research into implementing nature-inspired algorithms in decentralised, asynchronous and parallel environments. These characteristics typify environments such as Peer-To-Peer systems, the Grid and autonomic computing which demand robustness, decentralisation, parallelism, asynchronicity and self-organisation. Nature-inspired systems promise these properties. However, curren...
متن کاملEvaluation of Adaptive Nature Inspired Task Allocation Against Alternate Decentralised Multiagent Strategies
Adaptive multiagent algorithms based upon the behaviour of social insects are powerful decentralised systems capable of solving complex problems. The intelligence of such a system lies not within a single agent but is a product of a network of simple interactions. Under the context of a mail collection environment different techniques are implemented and evaluated. The paper creates a number of...
متن کاملFrom Cellular Attractor Selection to Adaptive Signal Control for Traffic Networks.
The management of varying traffic flows essentially depends on signal controls at intersections. However, design an optimal control that considers the dynamic nature of a traffic network and coordinates all intersections simultaneously in a centralized manner is computationally challenging. Inspired by the stable gene expressions of Escherichia coli in response to environmental changes, we expl...
متن کاملAn Optimal Dynamic Control Method for an Isolated Intersection Using Fuzzy Systems
Traffic flow systems are nonlinear and uncertain, so it is very difficult to find their optimal points. In traditional traffic control systems, the traffic lights of crossings change in a fixed time period that is not optimal. On the other hand, most proposed systems are sufficiently capable of coping with the uncertainties of traffic flow. To solve this problem, there is a need to develop expe...
